"Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney stepped aboard a World War II-era aircraft carrier docked here in Charleston Harbor on Thursday to deliver a forceful defense of military spending.

During an era of fiscal austerity in Washington, Romney said he wants to grow the nation’s defense budget to help fund an expansion of the country’s aging Navy and Air Force fleets.
