"A whole 185 years had to pass before Simon Bolivar’s dream of uniting Latin America into one nation finally began to materialize. This became evident last week when the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held its maiden summit in Venezuela’s Caracas, with leaders of 33 member countries in attendance. That long-awaited meeting had been preceded by 200 years of liberation struggle, first against Spanish colonial rule and then against U.S. imperialism, whose founding fathers sought to expand their control into the southern hemisphere."
