"Russia’s patronage in Syria is based on political, geographical, strategically and economical grounds which dates back to old times. Soviets had patronage role after Syria’s establishment and this constituted the base of Syria’s international strategy.
In 1956, when Suez crisis brought the Western hostility in Arabic world, Soviets Union took the role of protecting the Arabic people in Middle East. While Baas party in Syria supports the union with Egypt, it suddenly gave up its claim and took side with Soviets. Even the agreements signed in soviets were defined as the victory of Arabian struggle against Western imperialists. It was thought that this new agreements and the collaboration with Soviets will strengthen Turkey, the enemy country in the north and Syria, which turned to Israel in the south."
