''Ordinary Greeks are turning to fishing as a way of putting food on the table during the economic crisis. According to official figures 37,000 people applied for a fishing permit last year - double the number of the year before, while 49,272 renewed an existing permit. A fishing license allows the permit holder to fish in the sea, lakes and rivers, by boat or from the shore, to a maximum of 10 kg of fish per day. In parallel, the number of people caught poaching, or fishing illegally, has risen, with the Greek Coast Guard blaming the phenomenon on the economic crisis crippling the country. 'In the last month the number of people who are fishing, not as a hobby, but to survive, has gone up,' a Coast Guard patrol officer told ANSA.''
