"Sen. Tom Coburn and Langston University officials are of different minds as to whether a $300,000 federal grant to study the effectiveness of electric fences for goats was money well spent.

Coburn released a study called the “Oklahoma Waste Report” where he questioned what he called wasteful federal spending inside the state.

The report accompanied Coburn’s “Back in Black,” which is a plan that aims to trim $9 trillion from the federal deficit as a response to the ongoing debt ceiling debate.

In a section of Coburn’s report of federal waste in Oklahoma titled “B-aaaaaaaad Use of Taxpayer Funds: New Electric Goat Fences,” he took aim at $300,000 Langston University received from the U.S. Department of Agriculture last August.

The grant specifically would develop a testing center to determine what electric fence modifications could be made to cattle barbed wire fences to contain goats.

“As difficult as goats may be to contain, scarce federal research dollars would be better spent on higher priority research, including Langston University’s own nationally recognized research on improving goat health,” Coburn writes"............READ MORE
