"Under siege from a glut of cheap Chinese imports and hamstrung by a persistently weak construction market, the makers of our windows and shower-screens are alarmed at a ''frightening'' drop in business.
''My members are becoming far more desperate in their talk,'' executive director of the Australian Glass & Glazing Association, Nigel Carpenter, said.
David Hunt, general manager at glass processor Australian Glass Group, said there had been a slump in business in recent weeks, which he put down to weakness in consumer confidence, exacerbated by the spectre of future interest rate rises and the carbon tax.
''Talking to our customers, there is a real lack of confidence out there,'' he said.
The rampant Australian dollar has rendered the prices of the only local float glass manufacturer, the CSR-owned Viridian, wholly uncompetitive . Some product lines are 50 per cent more expensive than their Chinese counterparts".............READ MORE
