"The Voice of America insists there was a “confrontation” between the Indian and Chinese navies in the South China Sea in July. The Associated Press insists Chinese navy “harassed” the Indian navy. Both VOA and AP are cocksure that the Chinese navy was involved. Neither VOA nor AP cares two hoots for the MEA statement on the subject.
The curious thing is that the MEA statement categorically denies that there was any “confrontation” at all and it doesn’t mention any “harassment”, either. Most interestingly, it doesn’t even say the Chinese navy was actually involved. The Chinese foreign ministry has also denied any knowledge of the reported incident. Nonetheless, FT went ahead and ran an editorial on ‘South China spree’, following up on its own earlier report which launched the story of the India-China “confrontation”.
