'Lawmakers press DoD for better bookkeeping'

"An audit would allow Congress to determine whether the Pentagon is spending money efficiently and where funding cuts or increases might make the most sense.

Senior officials told lawmakers that maintaining reliable records is a challenge.

For example, the Air Force has trouble knowing exactly how many spare engines it has. A recent review found that 30 percent of the service's spare engines were not properly accounted for, said Maj. Gen. Judith Fedder, director of logistics for the Air Force.
