For example, assuming ExxonMobil strikes gold in the inhospitable Afghan-Tajik region, how does it propose to transport the oil to the world market?
One solution could be to build a pipeline connecting the oil fields with the port of Karachi. A second possibility is to connect the Kazakh pipelines leading to Russia. But a third stunning possibility would be to sell the oil to China, which is next-door. In fact, discussions have just commenced on a Chinese proposal to Kabul to construct a new transit pipeline through northern Afghanistan.''
