''Germany will keep paying for the Greek “black hole”
From New Europe
''As long as Greece’s partners are looking at the Greek crisis as pragmatic accountants, the chances of Greece remaining in the Euro currency are minimal, if any. Greece accounts for less than 3% of the Eurozone and in the past two years Germany and France have intelligently managed to help their banks pass the Greek toxic papers in their portfolios to the Central European Bank. So, after Berlin and Paris secured their banks, the European accountants thought that they could easily send Greece to hell.''

''GREEK DEBT: under-reported in 2007, over-reported in 2009, and indeterminate in 2012''
From The Slog
''A couple of days ago, Der Spiegel gave the Greeks something of a hammering by sensationally alleging that the country’s deficit isn’t €12.5bn at all, but in fact €20bn. But from Day One, the real size of the country’s problem has been the subject of wildly differing views.''

''The Rise and Rise of Greece’s Neo-Nazis''
From New Left Project
''As summer draws to a close in Greece, the latest opinion poll shows falling support for every party in Parliament. Except one that is - the neo-nazi Golden Dawn. From 6.9% in June's legislative election, a Pulse poll for Pontiki newspaper puts the Greek fascists on 10.5% of the popular vote, 2.5% ahead of the centre-left PASOK, who previously polled 43.92% in Greece's 2009 elections before watching their support collapse in the wake of the Eurozone crisis.''

''Thousands of Greeks protest pay cuts''
From SBS Australia
''Thousands of police have marched through Athens, chanting "thieves, thieves" and carrying black flags, to oppose planned pay cuts under a huge new austerity package meant to save Greece from defaulting on its mountain of debt.
The 4000 protesters, who also included firefighters and coast guard officers, lit flares, blared spray-can horns, and set up mock gallows outside parliament.''

''Greece Awaits Its Destiny''
From Eurasia Review
''The eurozone’s debt crisis remains the focus of attention of the EU leaders. On Monday, France and Germany agreed upon a plan to set up a new body to coordinate the debt problems of Greece, Spain and Italy. In late September-early October, the “troika” of international money lenders – the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund – will assess the economic and financial situation in Greece and its ability to fulfill the terms of new loans.''

Analysis: ''A portrait of a Greek city in crisis''
From The Bureau Investigates
''The sense of poverty is palpable. Pavements that until last year were repaired by a funded municipal government now lie cracked. Backstreets that used to be lit at night are now plunged into darkness. New graffiti covers buildings and houses like overgrown ivy. The painted words have a marked anti-German sentiment: ‘No to fascists’ and ‘Nazis and politicians get out’.''

Greece: 'fishing boom' as Greeks fight to survive'
From Ansamed
''Ordinary Greeks are turning to fishing as a way of putting food on the table during the economic crisis. According to official figures 37,000 people applied for a fishing permit last year - double the number of the year before, while 49,272 renewed an existing permit. A fishing license allows the permit holder to fish in the sea, lakes and rivers, by boat or from the shore, to a maximum of 10 kg of fish per day. In parallel, the number of people caught poaching, or fishing illegally, has risen, with the Greek Coast Guard blaming the phenomenon on the economic crisis crippling the country. 'In the last month the number of people who are fishing, not as a hobby, but to survive, has gone up,' a Coast Guard patrol officer told ANSA.''

''Wave of Suicides Shocks Greece''
From Spiegel Online

''More than half young Greeks are unemployed''
From EU OBserver
''Greek youth unemployment figures released on Thursday (9 August) by the Hellenic Statistic Authority marked another record high at 54.9 percent in May compared to around 41 percent to the same period last year.

''Complete Absurdity in Greece: ECB Prints Euros to Give to Greece to Make Interest Payments to ECB''
From Mish
''No entity is willing to stand up and say the obvious, that Greece is insolvent and cannot and will not pay back its debts.
Moreover, in spite of an ECB mandate that prohibits direct financing of governments, the ECB is doing just that.
Simply put, the ECB is printing euros, to give to the Greece, so that Greece can make interest payments to the ECB on maturing bonds.''

''Layoffs Coming for Thousands of Greek Workers''
From Greek Reporter
''Saying that “the numbers don’t add up,” for Greece to make 11.5 billion euros ($14.16 billion) in cuts ordered by international lenders to keep lifeline loans coming, Finance Minister Yiannis Stournaras said the new coalition government is ready to bring back the idea of laying off thousands of public workers.
Stournaras said they would be put into a so-called Labor Reserve Pool for one year and be forced to take a 40 percent pay cut. The government led by Prime Minister Antonis Samaras’ New Democracy Conservatives, partnered with the PASOK Socialists and Democratic Left, had vowed to protect public jobs but now has reportedly backtracked, as it did on the notion of renegotiating the terms of bailouts with the Troika of the European Union-International Monetary Fund-European Central Bank (EU-IMF-ECB.).''

''What Happens to Greece's Gold When They Exit the Eurozone''
From Market Oracle
''Will Greece Exit the Eurozone?
With Germany's leaders telling us that the exit from the Eurozone by Greece no longer holds terror for them, we understand that they are prepared for such an eventuality. As the E.U. leader's representatives went to Greece this week to see the progress on the implementation of structural reforms and the austerity measures, it became clear to all that while we must wait for the results from them, Greece is failing in its efforts and further financing will be held beck for now, at least. Adding to the woes in Greece, there is little agreement within their Parliament. The Greek government is itself a broad mix of conservatives and Socialists.''

''UK prepared to seal border against Greeks''
From EU Observer
''The UK revealed Tuesday (3 July) it is prepared to seal its borders from Greeks and other eurozone citizens caught up in the fall-out of the sovereign debt crisis in the event of “extraordinary stresses and strains”.
“You have to plan, you have to have contingencies, you have to be ready for anything – there is so much uncertainty in our world. But I hope those things don't become necessary,” UK’s Prime Minister David Cameron told MPs at a home affairs committee.''

Greece: ''the Washington v Berlin poker game returns…to Athens’ advantage''
From 'The Slog'
''The eurozone has been a pimple on the backside of global money for two years now, but while the buttock-blemish just keeps on getting bigger, nothing seems to bring it to a head. My theory is that the problem is now so big, it has expanded far beyond the fiscal arse, and is about to launch an assault on the head: but whether I’m right or wrong, there’ve been so many jigsaw bits, clues and signs falling into place of late, you’d have to be Mr Magoo in a tank not to notice them.
What’s going on here is a high-stakes poker game between Washington and Berlin. And once again, we are talking Greek default into the welcoming arms (in every sense) of America v Merkel’s FiskalUnion vision wherein Greece stays in the eurotent…along with its strategic, mineral, and energy importance to Brussels.''

''ECB may take losses in second Greek debt restructuring''
From Ekathimerini
''European policymakers are working on «last chance» options to bring Greece's debts down and keep it in the eurozone, with the ECB and national central banks looking at taking significant losses on the value of their bond holdings, officials said.
Private creditors have already suffered big writedowns on their Greek bonds under a second bailout for Athens sealed in February, but this was not enough to put the country back on the path to solvency and a further restructuring is on the cards.''
