'Big companies got more than $8B in small-biz contracts'

"The federal government awarded more than $8 billion worth of small-business contracts to companies that earn hundreds of millions of dollars a year and employ thousands of employees, according to an advocacy group representing small businesses.

Hundreds of federal small business contract awards went to General Electric, Lockheed Martin, AT&T and other large companies or their subsidiaries last year, says the American Small Business League (ASBL) in a new analysis of federal contracts awarded last year.

The ASBL's analysis came days after the June 24 Small Business Administration announcement that agencies awarded 22.7 percent, or $98 billion, of federal contract dollars to small businesses in 2010. Agencies are required by law to award a combined 23 percent of federal contracting dollars to small businesses.

Of the top 100 firms awarded small-business contracts in fiscal 2010, 61 were large businesses or owned by large companies, according to ASBL. The 61 firms received more than $8 billion, or nearly 60 percent, of the $14 billion that went to the top 100 companies.

ASBL contends the small-business contract figures are also inflated because the government underreports how much money it spends on contracted goods and services.
