"Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin on 30 June said his country intended to increase its presence in the Arctic to develop energy resources there and to protect its national interests. "We are open for a dialogue with our foreign partners and with all our neighbors in the Arctic region, but of course, we will defend our own geopolitical interests firmly and consistently," Interfax quoted Putin as saying at a meeting of the ruling United Russia party in Yekaterinberg. He also said that Russia has big plans for the development of its Pacific shelf, as well as the Black Sea and Caspian Sea. However, the cabinet leader underlined that only the best companies will be allowed shelf access, a transcript from the government press service read.
Development of the Arctic should be a top government priority because of its marine life and energy resources, and because of its strategic importance as the shortest aviation route between North America and Asia, Putin said. Russia is developing a major oil and gas field in the Arctic Ocean some 600 kilometers north of the Kola Peninsula.
