changing that cost curve is obviously easier said than done. There are
so many forces who want to preserve the status quo – ranging from us
patients who don't want to lose any options to the vast "medical
industrial complex" constantly providing new products. (That phrase, by
the way, was first used by then editor of The New England Journal of Medicine,
Arnold Relman, who was obviously playing off the famous warning by
President Eisenhower about the "military industrial complex.") No wonder
there were six lobbyists from the medical industry for every member of
Congress during the debate about the Affordable Care Act!''
