at King's College in London, the US accounts for five percent of the
world’s population and 25 percent of the world’s prisoners, with its
prison rates at 724 people per 100,000. Russia follows with a rate of
615 per 100,000, while in China the rate is 118.
America’s
total prison population is estimated to be as many as 2,193,798 people.
A US Justice Department report published on November, 30 showed that a
record 7 million people (one in every 32 American adults) were behind
bars, on probation or on parole at the end of 2011. China ranks second
with 1,548,498 and Russia third with just 874,161 inmates.''
