"The Afghan cabinet has instructed Minister of Mines Wahidullah Shahrani to sign an agreement allowing China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) to drill for oil in the Amu Darya River basin, media reported.
Chinese and Afghan officials will sign the deal December 28, Mines Ministry spokesman Jawad Omar told Bloomberg News December 27. CNPC has formed a joint venture with Afghanistan’s Watan Group, AFP reported.
The oil deposits have an estimated 87m barrels and are situated in Sar-e Pul and Faryab provinces, media reported."
