Afghanistan set to shift up a gear through 2013 -
as the last residues of the United States' "surge"
are pulled back from the war theater and as the
2014 deadline approaches for the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization (NATO) to withdraw - Beijing
seems destined to play a larger role. In terms of
China's national priorities over the development
of its eastern regions, especially Xinjiang, and
the consolidation of its rapidly expanding
economic investments in Afghanistan and Central
Asia, Beijing has no choice but to project itself
as a stakeholder in the stabilization of
Afghanistan.''
