''Portugal has been a relatively calm haven since the country was forced to ask for an international bailout but today saw violent clashes between protesters and police forces in front of parliament.
Protesters threw shower of rocks, leading riot police to disperse
crowds and charge on protesters, causing an unknown number of wounded
and arrests. Several fires also broke out in the area.
The charge was “the most adequate way to defend the physical
integrity of (police) agents who were in the front line and were
provoked during 45 minutes”, according to a spokesman from police in the Lisbon metropolitan area, quoted by newsagency Lusa.''
