"By the same token, the war of words between the Philippines and China over the disputed Spratly group of islets is not only puerile but is also another exercise in futility between an emerging economic and military super power and a puny nation that cannot even legislate a reproductive health bill.
If truth be told, China, prepared, fearless with the world’s largest land army and expanding naval capability, is not at the moment a belligerent military nation but an insatiable and hungry economy whose paramount foreign policy is propelled by China’s need to scour all over the world, including Spratlys vaunted submarine riches, in its need to secure energy, metals, oil, strategic minerals, and food to feed and support the rising living standards of its people, one-fifth of the world’s total population of nearly 6 billion humans.
It is in this perspective that the disputes on the Spratlys and claim of ownership by China, Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Malaysia, Thailand, and any other, must be holistically viewed. The disputes can be resolved not by saber-rattling, word wars, or military provocations but by negotiations, sharing, and the power of the intellect in the negotiating table"..................LINK
