The US President, Barack Obama, has surprised the world by choosing to
travel to Burma two weeks after his re-election triumph, the first trip
by a US president to the south-east Asian nation that is emerging from
five decades of repressive military rule.
It will be viewed with concern in Beijing which has for decades been Burma's closest ally.
The visit is likely to dilute the influence of China in the country that
is strategically located between India and China, the region's two big
powers.
